Development AI MCP Server
Based on Data Warehouse Starter, this setup pairs SQL Server Standard 2022 or 2025 on Windows with Node.js for developing a Model Context Protocol (MCP) service. Perfect for integration with AI tools like Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot. The linked Microsoft Learn MCP server provides documentation access; it is a separate remote service, not a connector to your SQL instance.
Recommended Edition
SQL Server Standard
Version
2022 or 2025
Best For
AI-assisted development, MCP integration, analytics, and ETL
Required Components
- SQL Server Standard Database Engine (2022 or 2025)
- Windows supported by the selected SQL Server version
- Node.js LTS with npm
- SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)
- A Node.js-based MCP server implementation with a SQL Server driver
Optional Add-ons
- Integration Services (SSIS)
- Reporting Services (SSRS)
- Analysis Services (SSAS)
- Visual Studio Code with an MCP-capable client
Hardware / Cloud Recommendations
- 32GB RAM minimum (64GB+ recommended for larger analytics workloads)
- Fast sequential read storage, preferably SSD or NVMe
- Multi-core CPU sized for concurrent SQL, ETL, and Node.js workloads
Licensing Notes
SQL Server Standard licensing applies, including for this development setup. Confirm licensing and version-specific feature limits with Microsoft before deployment. This guide does not require Enterprise Edition.
Backup Recommendation
Schedule full and differential backups using SQL Agent, store a copy separately from the development host, and validate restores. Consider filegroup backups for larger warehouse databases.
Monitoring Recommendation
Use Query Store and BI monitoring for SQL workloads. Monitor Node.js process health and review MCP request and error logs without recording sensitive data.
SQLDevDBA's Take
Keep the data warehouse foundations, but give SQL Server and Node.js enough memory to coexist. Start with at least 32GB RAM, a small development dataset, and read-only MCP tools. The Microsoft Learn MCP server is useful for documentation lookup; your SQL data needs its own carefully scoped MCP integration.
Startup Checklist
- Install a supported Windows release and apply current updates
- Download and install SQL Server Standard 2022 or 2025 from Microsoft (microsoft.com/sql-server/downloads)
- Install SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) for development workloads
- Install Node.js LTS with npm from https://nodejs.org/en/download and verify node --version and npm --version
- Create a DBAAdmin database to house admin and maintenance scripts
- Enable the Dedicated Admin Connection (DAC) via sp_configure
- Configure and validate automated backup jobs
- Install and configure your chosen Node.js-based MCP server and SQL Server driver against the development SQL instance
- Create a least-privilege SQL identity for the MCP service and test an approved read-only query from your MCP client
- Review Microsoft Learn MCP Server documentation: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/training/support/mcp
Security Checklist
- Use row-level security to restrict data exposed to AI clients
- Use Dynamic Data Masking where appropriate, alongside explicit access permissions
- Disable or deny the SA (System Administrator) login
- Restrict Windows Firewall access to SQL Server and the MCP service to trusted clients
- Keep MCP database credentials out of source code and client-facing responses
- Start with read-only MCP tools and require explicit approval before enabling write operations
- Do not expose sensitive or production data to AI clients without authorization
Additional (Optional) Checklist
- Install Integration Services (SSIS) if ETL workloads are needed
- Install dbatools PowerShell module (dbatools.io) for automation and migrations
- Install Brent Ozar's First Responder Kit (sp_Blitz, sp_BlitzFirst, sp_BlitzIndex)
- Install Adam Machanic's sp_WhoIsActive for real-time active session monitoring
- Install Erik Darling's performance scripts (sp_PressureDetector, sp_HumanEvents)
- Install Ola Hallengren's Maintenance Solution for backups, integrity checks, and index maintenance
- Add Columnstore indexes to representative warehouse tables and compare Query Store results
- Connect an MCP-capable client to the remote Microsoft Learn MCP server for documentation lookup
